The Series
Every character in The Root Kingdom gets their own journey across several books. Each series asks a different big question, and each one gives children something new to take away.
A bedtime story with something extra.Children get an adventure full of heart and humour. The grown-up reading aloud gets real history, gentle life lessons and plenty to talk about afterwards. That’s why the books work just as well shared in a classroom as they do curled up at home.
Characters and Mentors. Each book stars one of the young fruit or vegetable characters. Every Realm has two Mentors, one for the vegetables and one for the fruit. They are the wise ones of the garden: they have watched every food arrive in their land, and they guide the young characters on their journeys. Meet them all
Series 1: Origins
“Where do I come from?”
Each hero travels back through time to discover the real story of their food: where it first grew, who carried it across the world, and how it reached our plates.
What children take away: real history and geography in story form, curiosity about where everyday food comes from, and an honest “nobody knows for sure” where history is uncertain.
Series 2: Friendship
“Who do I let in, and how?”
Two very different characters, cautious and bold or tidy and messy, have to work out how to be friends. When things go wrong, the hero puts it right themselves.
What children take away: empathy, accepting differences, saying sorry and meaning it, and how good friendships work both ways.
Series 3: Problem Solving
“What can I do on my own, when it’s hard?”
The hero faces a fear or a problem, tries, fails, and tries again until they find their own way through. Nobody rescues them.
What children take away: resilience, a growth mindset, and seeing that getting it wrong is part of getting it right.
Series 4: Event Specials
“Why do we still do this, every year?”
Halloween, Bonfire Night, harvest festivals and more. These are released around the real dates, and each one uncovers the true history behind a celebration.
What children take away: the meaning behind traditions and seasonal events, which is ideal for topic weeks and assemblies.
Series 5: Inter-Realm
“What can we build together that none of us could alone?”
Friends from the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand join forces on one shared quest. Each brings something that only their part of the world can offer.
What children take away: other cultures and countries, teamwork, and celebrating differences rather than competing.
